Scouting for Milkweed in Santa Barbara County

I was really glad to have a chance to visit several  field sites in Santa Barbara County recently!  I was lucky to joined on this trip by Francis Villablanca, a collaborator from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and three of his excellent students and research assistants, Elizabeth, Summer and Kaitryn. I also had some help in the field from Tab, Karoo and Kermit:

We were on a mission to relocate some field sites that Adrian Wenner and his students collected data on several decades ago. We found several of them! Here are some photos from the trip:

We also saw lots of monarchs on these milkweeds. Several of them were chowing down on A. eriocarpa flowers:
